This book was written by the real deal: A US Navy SEAL sniper and covers the training required of the modern sniper and details their deployment to both Iraq and Afghanistan during the recent wars. The snipers are a collection of fascinating men of great persistence, and will power, from the US Marines, Army, Navy and the Canadian army.I did not enjoy this book. I destroyed it. I could not put it down. It was amazing. Of course, I expected it to be great because of the author’s previous book Inside the Red Circle. Unlike other books i go back and reread sections of this book looking for small details I may have missed. As a trainer and training junkie; the technical material covered in this book is astonishing. If you know something about firearms and marksmanship it does not get much better. Frankly, it gets a little overwhelming sometimes. I admit it. I am a marksmanship slob and snob. I always work to improve what I do…but greatly admire the near total near mastery of the art of the rifle these men have.I can always tell how much I enjoyed a book by the number of “dog ears” and bookmarks I made while reading it. This one, it turns out, is one of those rare books I took notes while reading and followed up topics seeking more information. This is an example of how reading is training. The book is easy to read and well written. My only issue with this book is my own. The author drove me nuts by writing much of it chronographically but in different areas of the world. I was glued to one section when I suddenly transitioned into another fascinating section. I just wanted to know how the other section ended! It all comes together nicely but the suspense is great...he's probably laughing at this comment.I guess it could be said; Webb writes like the Paul Harvey of the Navy. I keep waiting for the rest of the story! If you liked a book I would recommend Sean Pernell’s book, “Outlaw Platoon” and of course “American Sniper,” by the late Chris Kyle. I was also recommend The Men, The Mission and Me, by Pete Blaber as they will provide a much bigger view of the events mentioned in this book.
